Groundhog Day
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2025
Consider a Groundhog Day event and partake in this wintry tradition! While this is a regional tradition observed in the US and Canada on February 2 of every year, its origins are far-reaching and originate with Pennsylvania Dutch superstition. If the groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will continue for 6 more weeks; if it doesn’t see its shadow, spring will arrive early. Why not have your patrons ‘hedge their bets’!
Ask patrons to enter a special drawing (players will include their name and indicate whether/not the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow on February 2). Winners will need to be present at the drawing. Display a video of Phil’s emergence at your bingo hall and randomly draw for the first player with the right answer and award them a “Punxsutawney Phil” plushie! Small plush toys can be sourced online or at a local discount store near you!
You can also host a bingo game with the “P” pattern (for Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania!), or perhaps a “Top Hat” pattern to celebrate the “Inner Circle,” those who take care of “Phil” and manage the Groundhog Day Festivities!
The first player to complete the pattern is awarded a free buy-in at a future bingo OR can be awarded several free pull tab tickets for a deal already in play! This can create interest for your players in both bingo and your pull tab ticket events!
